Case Study: Soft Drinks Dispersion Of Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, Acesulfame K and Saccharin are often used to replace sucrose sugar in "low calorie" or "diet" soft drinks. Whilst more expensive than sucrose sugar a lower percentage of artificial sweetener can replace high sugar content. Thickening agents, such as CMC, are often also added to replicate the mouth feel of sugar based formulations.

The Problem
Whilst dissolving these powders with conventional systems a number of difficulties can be experienced:

  • The powders are slow to dissolve, even with heating
  • Waste from incomplete dissolving
  • Build up of material on process walls
  • Powders have a tendency to float on the surface of the base liquid
  • Tendency of powders to agglomerate slowing dissolution
  • Wear and maintenance from rotating parts of conventional mixing systems
