MOCON, Inc. announces the creation of its new PAC CHECK® Performance Series™ brand of gas headspace analyzers for modified atmosphere packaging. The introduction heralds a new approach to instrumentation technology, manufacturing and marketing.

The Performance Series will eventually include several different classes of products based upon various advanced sensor and control technologies. Instrumentation will be categorized based on technology approach and performance results in the "three Rs" — response time, repeatability, and resolution.

"Not only do we want to build state-of-the-art instrumentation based on the latest technology, but we also want to do it in a way that clearly illustrates performance to potential buyers in a ‘good, better, best' way," explains Anthony Ahmed, product manager, MOCON.

The company has selected the three most important attributes as performance and comparison benchmarks.

Response time is the speed in which accurate, reliable testing can be executed. Repeatability refers to the precision and control of the instrument coupled with its ability to recreate the same result on the same test. Resolution is the volume of gas the unit is capable of capturing for measurement.

The first product launch under the Performance Series umbrella is the recently launched PAC CHECK® Model 450 EC benchtop oxygen (O2) headspace analyzer. This also introduces the "EC" (electrochemical) class of products within the series.

Products in the EC class have been designed under the ‘fast, accurate, simple' approach and are positioned to appeal to small businesses and entry-level companies in emerging global economies.

"For example, the EC class will appeal to a group of users who are ‘value-intelligent' but might have a limited revenue stream because they are in the process of building their business," Ahmed says.

"As the market approach for gas headspace analyzers continues to become more global in nature, MOCON recognizes that one or two products cannot address the broad spectrum of users and needs. The creation of several classes of instrumentation—with varying performance capabilities, is better suited to meet today's global requirements," Ahmed concludes.

MOCON is a leading provider of instrumentation and consulting and laboratory services to medical, pharmaceutical, food and other industries worldwide.
