Optical Sensor
The sensor is particularly sensitive to milkfat because the major fraction of milkfat particles is the same size as the 860-nm infrared light employed by the sensor. It employs fiber optics to measure light backscatter– light reflected off particles in the opposite direction of incidence.
The sensor was designed for durability and to function in wet and demanding environments of dairy plants. The sensor design is compact, rigid, sanitary, corrosion resistant, and watertight. The entire enclosure and probe are fabricated of 316 SS. The design is also in compliance with 3A Sanitary Standard 46-02. It has the size and configuration of an "RTD" sensor and is available with a 1½, 2" or 2½" Tri Clamp connection. Other common Tri Clamp connections and other standard "RTD Type" connections are available on special order.
Calibration is easy and can often be performed inline. The sensor provides a 4-20 mA output signal with conventional zero and span calibration in one compact configuration. In addition, three LED light output ranges are available to adjust light output to match the reflectance characteristics of different products.
