Land O'Lakes Recalls Milk
Single-serve cartons of Land O'Lakes 2% milk have been recalled in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana because of possible contamination. Kohler Mix Specialties Inc., a subsidy of Michael Foods Inc., announced the recall Tuesday of Land O'Lakes' 10-oz, 2% milk cartons dated Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.
The company said the milk could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Mark Witmer, a Kohler spokesman, didn't have precise figures but said the recall involved fewer than 1,000 cases of the product. Each case holds 24 cartons. The recall was prompted after a customer turned in a carton that "had an off odor," Witmer said.
The milk tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, but samples from the production dates in question tested negative, he said. It is possible the contamination happened during distribution after the milk left the plant, which was more than a month ago, he said.
