International Interest in Organic Food Benefits Certification Business

Quality Assurance International (QAI), a North American independent and professional organic certification company, enjoyed a 454% sales growth from 1994 through fiscal 1998 with average annual growth of 87%. In 1994, the company served fewer than 100 certified entities (CE) compared to more than 500 CE today.

It is estimated that overall organic industry growth is currently between 20% and 24%, according to the Organic Trade Association. Internationally, QAI certifies a number of foreign countries. The international business represents approximately 35% of QAI's overall sales.

The company manages branch offices in Japan and Canada, and anticipates a third international branch office by the year 2000. The company currently contracts with more than 40 independent inspectors worldwide.

The increasing interest in organic food worldwide has captured the attention of major food manufacturers. ``We're seeing healthy activity and interest from nationally recognized brands that are seeking entry into the organic market place,'' said QAI's senior vice president Joseph Smillie. ``Consumers can expect in several years to find many familiar brand names offering organic options on mainstream supermarket shelves.''

According to Smillie, who recently returned from an international organic suppliers' conference, the big news internationally is cross-pollination among European, Japanese and North American manufacturing companies. ``In today's organic marketplace, we must be very dedicated to international recognition in order to support international shipping and manufacturing for our clients,'' explained Smillie.
