Indo-Brazil Collaboration To Enhance The Cattle Genomics

On Tuesday, December 10, India and Brazil inked tripartite MoU to enhance cattle genomics through a first-of-its-kind cross-continental genetic improvement program. The Indo-Brazil agreement is based on the first-of-its-kind B2G collaboration between the two countries in bovine genomics. Not only this, but it also signifies Embrapa’s first private partnership with a private organisation in India which signals a convergence of livestock & agricultural innovation, food security priorities and shared global leadership in cattle genetics

The Indo-Brazil agreement intends to establish a state-of-the-art Cattle Genomics Laboratory in India, carrying the combination of Brazil’s world-leading genetic technologies with India’s expanded dairy ecosystem, indigenous breeds and rapidly modernising agri-tech and dairy-tech infrastructure. This Indo-Brazil collaboration would stress on enhancing key cattle and buffalo species such as Bos indicus, Bos taurus and Bubalus bubalis to significantly improve milk production, reproductive efficiency and climate resilience across India.

Notably, the partnership will advance the livestock productivity and boost national scientific capabilities by introducing advanced tropical dairy genetics, climate-resilient species and cutting-edge genomic research, Interestingly, the Indo-Brazil collaboration will anchor its work at B.L. Kamdhenu Farms’ 10,000-head Integrated Model Dairy Farm in Bareilly, which is evolving into a multi-location Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Indigenous Cattle Genetics & Circular Dairy Economy, supported by genomics labs, IVF facilities and farmer networks.
