Good Humor-Breyers launches CarbSmart Ice Cream

The ice cream comes in three of the most popular ice cream flavors -- Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. 01/10/2003 There is something missing from the ice cream aisle! Not taste, not variety, but carbohydrates. As an estimated 30 to 50 million Americans cut carbs from their diets, Good Humor- Breyers introduces Breyers® CarbSmart(TM) Ice Cream and a line of frozen novelties under the Klondike® CarbSmart(TM) brand. Low-carbohydrate diets have been around since the 1970s and have recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. The premise behind low-carbohydrate diets is that when carbohydrate intake is reduced, the body primarily burns fat for fuel, which leads to weight loss. Cutting back on carbohydrates could mean eliminating foods like ice cream, but with the new CarbSmart products from Good Humor-Breyers, low-carb dieters can still enjoy a dish of "real" ice cream or their favorite ice cream novelty from national brands, Breyers® and Klondike®. New Breyers CarbSmart Ice Cream will be launched in three of the most popular ice cream flavors -- Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. All three contain 130 calories per one-half cup serving and just 4 grams net carbohydrate (10g total carbs, minus dietary fiber and sugar alcohol). As a basis for comparison, premium vanilla ice cream typically contains between 15g and 17g of total carbohydrate per serving. New CarbSmart Ice Creams, sweetened with Splenda®, contain just 4 grams net carbohydrate. For consumers who prefer frozen novelties, two novelties under the Klondike CarbSmart banner will also be available: a 3.0-fluid-ounce vanilla ice cream bar with milk chocolate-flavored coating containing 170 calories and 5g net carbohydrate, and a 3.5-fluid-ounce fudge bar containing 100 calories and 3g net carbohydrate. Both are sweetened with Splenda®. Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream, headquartered in Green Bay, Wis., is among the largest manufacturers and marketers of branded packaged ice cream and frozen novelties in the U.S. In the U.S., the company operates six manufacturing facilities and employs 2,400 people. Its well-known brands include Breyers® Ice Cream, Popsicle®, Good Humor® and Klondike®. Good Humor-Breyers is an operating unit of Unilever.
