FrieslandCampina Expands Butter Production Capacity At Lochem Butter Factory
FrieslandCampina officially commissioned new butter production capacity in Lochem on 18 June 2026. With this expansion, the dairy company is increasing the production capacity of its butter factory and strengthening Lochem’s position within FrieslandCampina’s production network.
More capacity and more sustainable production
With the expansion, FrieslandCampina is responding to the growing demand for butter products for professional use and for consumers. This includes butter for professional customers under the Debic brand, supplied in boxes, and consumer products in wrappers for brands such as Campina Botergoud, Frico and Frau Antje. The new installation also makes production more efficient and more sustainable. On an annual basis, the expansion is expected to save 700,000 kWh of electricity, 95,000 m³ of gas and 50,000 m³ of water.
Peter Grugeon, President FrieslandCampina Professional, expressed his appreciation during the commissioning for the employees who worked on the expansion. “This milestone is the result of the dedication, expertise and collaboration of many colleagues. Thanks to their commitment, this project has been realised and today we can look ahead with pride.”
Centralisation of butter production in Lochem
The expansion is linked to the previously announced centralisation of butter production in Lochem. In June 2025, FrieslandCampina closed the butter factory in Den Bosch, after which production was transferred to the production location in Lochem.
Winnie Schouten, plant director at FrieslandCampina Lochem, underlined the significance of the expansion for the site. “This expansion is an important step for our factory in Lochem. We are not only increasing our butter capacity but also taking a step forward in more efficient and more sustainable production. That is something we as a team can be proud of.”
The production location in Lochem also has a broader role within FrieslandCampina. In addition to butter, FrieslandCampina produces butter oil, milk powder and filtration products from milk there. The site processes large volumes of milk and cream and, in addition to consumer butter packs, mainly supplies bulk products, such as milk powder in bags, to business-to-business customers and the international dairy market.
