Freeze-Dried Food Plan Targets Y2K Issues
Engineered Protection Systems (EPS), headquartered in Houston, is a distributor for AlpineAire Foods, which produces bulk supplies of a gourmet, freeze-dried food line. AlpineAire (Grass Valley, CA) has been providing these foods to NASA, the U.S. Navy Seals, the U.S. Forest Service Smoke Jumpers, Mount Everest expeditions, and outdoor enthusiasts since 1979.
The food product is known for its variety, nutritional value -- no MSG or preservatives -- and good taste. EPS food packages include selections for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snacks, all nutritionally balanced. In light of public concern for predicted Y2K food shortages, EPS is now offering their freeze-dried food reserves to the public via the internet. The company has dubbed the program Meals2000.com.
The AlpineAire Foods line can be ordered on line or by telephone. Customers also can print out order information from the Web site and request the food by fax or mail.
Each one-month for one person order comes with a filled 60-gallon water soft-tank, which is enough to prepare all of the meals with six remaining pints of water per day.
The food arrives in air-tight, rust-proof cans and has a shelf life of more than 10 years. To prepare a meal, customers just add water -- no cooking is necessary.
Selections include beef, chicken and turkey dishes, pasta, soups, granola with milk, scrambled eggs, garden vegetables and more.
Andrew Wray, EPS vice president of marketing and Meals2000.com spokesman said that Y2K concerns already have forced AlpineAire Foods to double its capacity, and the company expects to quadruple it within the next three months.
Wray said EPS is not trying to fuel the fire of doomsday sayers by launching Meals2000.com. "The company's goal is here is to help people help themselves," he said. "We merely are offering a product that we feel any reasonable person might want to investigate."
Meals2000.com is a division of Engineered Protection Systems, Inc., a multi-million dollar security provider based in Houston.
