Australian Food Processor Installs RIMS.food Warehouse Management System

Golden Circle Limited, one of Australia's largest fresh fruit and vegetable manufacturing plants, has selected Robocom Systems International's RIMS.food warehouse management system. Based in Brisbane, Golden Circle's plus-million square foot plant produces over 400 fruit and vegetable products, including canned fruits and vegetables, fruit juices and drinks, cordials, soft drinks, jams and preserves for distribution in Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, the Far East and Japan.

According to Mark Gibson, warehouse and distribution manager at Golden Circle, the installation of RIMS.food has given the company the ability to take advantage of new technology, improve product tracking and be more responsive to customers.

RIMS.food is a specialized application of RIMS (The Robocom Inventory Management System), which offers an easy and effective method of monitoring the flow of material in and out of the warehouse as well as tracking current stock. It provides flexibility by adapting to the unique characteristics of warehouses and products.

The system provides complete warehouse functionality, out of the box and can be installed without costly modifications or customization. As a standard product, RIMS can be implemented in as little as 16 weeks. The easy to use, menu-driven application utilizes fixed video display computer terminals (VDT's) as the basis of the system. In its simplest configuration, RIMS will function as a paper-based operation using VDT's.

An optional radio frequency Radio Data Terminal (RDT) subsystem is also available to enhance the benefits of RIMS by operating in a paperless mode. The RIMS standard RDT subsystem supports all major RF hardware product lines. The system provides a standard conveyor interface and custom interfaces can be provided to support carousels, automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) or other material handling equipment as necessary.

Utilizing the industry-standard UNIX operating system, RIMS has been successfully ported to all major hardware platforms. Written in PROGRESS (a fourth generation language), the system supports numerous relational database management systems (e.g. PROGRESS DBMS, ORACLE, SYBASE, and ODBC-compliant databases).

RIMS.food, targeted specifically to the food industry, features the following:

  • Enhanced Pallet, Carton and Lot Tracking
  • Date Restrictions on Order Lines (sell by date, expiration date, production date)
  • Enhanced Catchweight Processing
  • Industry Specific Bar Coding

According to Gibson, the company was impressed with RIMS.food's "robust functionality, the strength of its interface with QAD, Inc.'s MFG/PRO enterprise resource planning software, the level of local technical support offered by Robocom Australia, and the fact that it is written in the 4GL language, Progress.''

Irwin Balaban, chairman, president and CEO of Robocom, said, ``Because our products offer flexibility and standard interfaces with a number of complementary systems, customers like Golden Circle can use our software as part of an integrated solution to enhance warehousing and manufacturing efficiency.''

Robocom Systems International Inc. provides standard warehouse management software solutions for companies and government agencies serving a variety of industries.
