Cal Poly Professor Named President Of American Dairy Science Association
Another dairy science professor wins a research award, and students fare well in quiz competition at Montreal meeting
San Luis, CA - Phillip Tong, dairy science professor and director of Cal Poly's Dairy Products Technology Center, was recently named the 93rd president of the American Dairy Science Association.
Tong was installed as the leader of the 103-year-old group at the organization's joint meeting with the American Society of Animal Science and Canadian Animal Science, held the week of July 13 in Montreal.
"This is a great honor for Dr. Tong, and it will bring much recognition to Cal Poly and its Dairy Science program," said Bruce Golden, head of the Dairy Science Department.
Also, Cal Poly Dairy Science professor Rafael Jimenez-Flores won the International Dairy Foods Association Research Award in Dairy Foods Processing. The award recognizes individuals whose research allows for the development of new products and improvement in the quality, safety or processing efficiency of dairy foods. The award, given by the ADSA, includes a plaque and a $1,500 honorarium.
Jimenez-Flores also organized and served as chairman of a symposium session on milk enzymes at the Montreal meeting, with five world-renowned experts.
A team of Cal Poly Dairy Science students placed second in the ADSA Student Activity Division Quiz Bowl at the meeting. The team – including members Travis Kamper, Annie Azivedo, David Jones and Kayla Machado – went through a double-elimination round without losing, including beating a team from Penn State. However, the Cal Poly team lost narrowly to Penn State in the final round. Dairy Science professors Ed Jaster and Leanne Berning coached the team.
As well, graduate students and faculty from the Dairy Science Department presented posters and judged competitions at the meeting, which was attended by more than 2,650 scientists from around the world.
"I am exceedingly proud of our department and its accomplishments," Golden said.
